Almost half of all Australians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. A recent study showed that 1 in 5 young Australians (15-19 years) suffer from serious mental illness (Youth Mental Health Report, 2017). Experiencing mental and emotional hardship is an inevitable part of life. Undoubtedly, your kids will also experience difficulties at some point in their development if they haven't already. The good news is that we can prepare your kids to successfully deal with hard times and not be overcome by them. The key to dealing with challenging situations begins with developing a strong foundation of resilience. A resilient person can make it through any challenge. Karate kids develop a fantastic sense of resilience, one that lasts a lifetime.
Resilience is discussed and practised at length within our weekly sessions. We prepare our kids to expect that life doesn't always go to plan and that it's likely we will experience high-stress situations at times; this is normal. The key to developing resilience is developing a strong sense of self-worth and belief, then establishing the emotional awareness to see things as they are. We remind our students that hard times are temporary if we are prepared to work towards changing either our circumstances or perceptions. Challenges can inspire great learning if we are prepared to embrace the lessons. It becomes a lot easier to remain resilient when we know that we are capable of creating the most amazing life for ourselves, regardless of the challenges along the way.
